Craft Fair Conundrum

A couple weeks ago, I did a craft fair.

I hauled most of my stuff there,

and sat down and waited for the money shower to begin!

I mean, I had holiday stuff.

I had tissue holders for stocking stuffers or Hanukkah gifts.

I had quilts that ranged from tiny...

to big.

Unfortunately, the money shower was only a trickle,
and I made (after my table fee) only...

...$39.00.

However, my booth mate?

Yeah, the patrons made it rain for him
like he was a girl in music video.

So I think that's my last craft fair for a while.
It was a lot of work to make just $39.00.

Instead I'll keep focusing on my Etsy shop.
The beauty of Etsy is someone can type in the search engine, for example,

and there it is, in my shop!

People don't usually have something so specific in mind when they hit a craft fair.

But through the beauty of the Wide Wide World of Web,
someone who needs exactly the right quilt for a
friend/sister/co-worker
can find that online.

"Omigod!  A Kawaii Kitty Quilt!"

So I'll be doing virtual craft fairs for the foreseeable future.

Books, Books, and More Books

As an enthusiastic book lover, educator, and former librarian,
I have... a few... books around the house.

(A note to my sister:  this is a humorous representation!  No need to call Hoarders!)

So when I ran out of bookshelves and needed a place for some of my series,
I turned to my extra wooden crates.

You may remember them from this project --

-- or this plea for someone to please, please, take some of my tomato seedlings
off my hands.

It turns out they're the perfect size for two Cutie boxes,
which in turn are the perfect size for most paperbacks.

If you want to make them taller and sturdier,
you could just use nylon zip ties.

But going two high is both steady and easy to dismantle if they need to be moved.
They would work well as a dorm room bookcase, yes?
They could be used to move things,
and then flipped on their side to hold manga and chunky Penguin classics.

Cool crate bookcases: easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy!

Harry Potter Quilt Update, Part Deux!

My second Harry Potter quilt, 35" x 45", is now available in my shop.

Remember, Dammit, Minnie readers are always entitled to 10% off,
with the sale code MINNIE at checkout!

ETA:  I sold this quilt,
but more are coming soon!

Well, I Thought it Was Hilarious

I've been working with kids for over twenty-five years,
and I always say:  it may be hard, but it's never boring.

Case in point:
D. ran up to me yesterday afternoon, yelling
"I lost my tooth!"

"How exciting!" I said, because it is.
Kids never get blasé about losing a tooth.

"No, I LOST my tooth!  It fell on the ground!!" he continued,
and after I told him Go find it!
he ran off, hands flapping, hollering Auuuuuuugghhh!!! as he searched for his lost tooth.

And I laughed and laughed.

ALSO...

I spent the morning photographing my three new Harry Potter quilts!

Here's a taste of the first one:

Keep an eye on my shop for the other two, coming soon!

I Wish I Could Kiss This Woman

I hate basting my quilts.
Haaaaate it.  Even with spray-basting, it's tricky to do.

So before I spray-basted my three quilts today,
I threw myself at the mercy of the Google gods.

(I dunno.  I pictured GoogleGod as nerdy-er.)

And, lo!  I was led to Chasing Cottons, where the delightful and helpful Kristie
had posted a tutorial, which included this super idea:

Use hand weights to hold the batting in place whilst the other layers
 are being centered and smoothed!

Sooo much easier and better!
I used to use both masking tape and  unwilling children,
and neither of them was satisfactory:
the tape kept popping up, and the kids kept trying to wander off.

Hey, you kids!  Get back here!  I still have two more quilts to do!

So head on over there to see her full tutorial;
if you're a quilter, you won't be sorry!

It's All Very Sunrise, Sunset, Around The House These Days

Today, the Sweet Man and I helped this boy...

... buy his first car.

It's been very much an experience like what the Daddy goes through in
that great Suburu commercial (you know the one)...

... but I gotta say, it's not like I turned around
and The Boy went from the  mysteriously smiling seven-year-old
to the almost-twenty-one-year-old he is overnight.

Nope, I'm feeling every minute of the twenty years it took to get
from caring for these bitty babies...

... to having a son who towers over me.

HOWEVER,
like the above commercial, I am PAINFULLY aware of how vulnerable
the Boy and the Girl are when they get behind the wheel.

For the love of the sweet baby Jeebus, people,
please stay out of their blind spots!

Don't brake too fast in front of them!

Don't even THINK about having too many drinks and drifting into their lanes!

Ahem.

Anyhoo, looking at the above photo of the baby Boy and Girl
makes me remember their baby quilts, which you can see behind them.
I worked on those throughout my pregnancy, staying up late when I couldn't sleep,
hand-quilting them while I listened to Bob Costas interview random celebrities on Later

(I spent so many late nights listening to Costas, that it's a wonder one of the babies didn't emerge sporting a side-part and a tie.)

I finished the Girl's quilt on the night of August 6th;
the babies were born on the morning of August 8th.
They came home from the hospital wrapped in their quilts,
and slept under them in their shared crib.

The Girl latched onto a silky-edged receiving blanket as her Lovey,
but the Boy loved that star quilt,
and carried it with him, and wrapped his stuffed animals in it,
and slept with it until it was raggedy enough that I had to replace the binding.

Fortunately, although worn enough you could poke a finger clean through,
it looked just fine all those years,
and not so babyish that a not-so-baby would feel silly taking it over to his cousins' house.

So, y'know, keep that in mind when giving a quilt to a new baby.
How is that quilt going to look when your baby is older?
When your baby is maybe six and cuddling his quilt,
what would he like to take to a sleepover?

Maybe... instead of giving a little guy a pale blue lambykins quilt,
hows about a cooler shark quilt?

And would you rather see your daughter haul around a pastel pink heart quilt
or one with hot pink hearses?

Your kids will probably outgrow their quilts before they get their driver's licenses,
but you never know. So instead of a powder-blue teddy bear quilt...

Why not a sugar skull quilt that can double as a "seat protector"?

If for no other reason,
it's something you wouldn't mind seeing for the next however many years.

Sugar Skull FTW!

My AVALANCHE of recent gardening posts
might lead you to believe that's all I do.

Au, contraire!

I am also an enthusiastic quilter!

I'll be taking this beauty to a craft show this weekend.

Wish me luck!
Although I'll probably make most of my money from my $4.00 tissue holders,
maybe someone will decide she can't live without
a hand-embroidered sugar skull lap quilt.

(Psssst... remember:  visitors to my blog can head over to my Etsy shop
and enter the code word MINNIE at check-out to receive 10% off!)

SIGH...

I made a freakin' AWESOME Gryffindor Snitch quilt to sell in my Etsy store.

Doesn't that whet your appetite to see the whole quilt?

Unfortunately...

...when it was time to photograph the quilt, I noticed something was a little off.
I was having a hard time getting the quilt to "square up" in the camera viewfinder.
Sure enough, when I held the top edge up against the bottom edge,
I realized that the bottom edge was a full FOUR INCHES shorter than the top edge.

ARGH!!!!

So, I guess I'm going to just keep this one.

And I'll be a heck of a lot more careful when I make another quilt with horizontal stripes.

This Kid's Childhood Is Going To Be EPIC

I occasionally get asked to do a custom quilt at my

This Misfits baby quilt was definitely the most hardcore request I've ever gotten.
